Our Little Story

  • 2009

The founder, a nurse by training, was unable to work after seventeen years in critical care and pediatrics due to the challenges of having a medically fragile son. She saw the same moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers, in hospital waiting rooms and outpatient therapy sessions, and began helping them to navigate the world of disability supports as she did so herself. Peninsula Pediatric Services was born.

  • 2012

The founder had been providing “DD” Waiver Case Management and Service Facilitation to families in Hampton Roads but expanded services to the entire state due to demand. No longer limited to the Peninsula, the agency was renamed Access Family Care.

  • 2014

Access Family Care expanded to include a specialized pediatric team – Access Pediatric Care – and the agency grew to fifteen case managers and five hundred families receiving support.

  • 2016

Medicaid redesigned its DD waiver services and fundamentally changed the way in which case management was reimbursed. As a result, Access stepped away from Case Management and embraced its core mission – advocacy. Access Child & Family Care was awarded tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to supporting greater integration for individuals with disabilities.

  • 2020

Access continues to support hundreds of families throughout the state. Our core mission of advocacy remains the mainstay of our support. Other services offered include Service Facilitation, Family Caregiver Training, Transition Coordination, Maternal Infant Care Coordination and Housing Guide Assistance to help integrate individuals with disabilities in the community.
